Artist Bio

My name is Kelly Christman. I am a young passionate artist who works primarily in clay but also enjoys exploring other mediums such as painting, drawing and glass blowing. My love for art began in elementary school and has continued to flourish ever since. I have been painting and drawing since I was a child and it continues to be a great emotional outlet and inspiration for my ceramic work. Throughout my high school career I took classes in painting, drawing, fibers, mixed media, animation and ceramics. I didn't start working with clay until my senior year of high school, but I immediately fell in love with the material and process. After graduation I continued my journey as an artist at Tyler School of Art, with the intent of being a ceramics major.

After completing my first year at Tyler I had some doubts if college was right for me, I decided I'd give it another year. Halfway through my sophomore year I decided that after the school year was over I was going to take a break. It was a tough decision because a good portion of my life I'd been working to get into Tyler and now that I was there it was not living up to my expectations. I was incredibly unhappy, felt like I wasn't learning anything new, and the classes were too slow paced. Not to mention the tens of thousands of dollars it was costing to attend. I hated the city, and I was tired of doing the same thing everyday and not making any real progress. I know what I want out life and college wasn't fulfilling it.

I decided I wanted to go the apprenticeship route. So I began documenting all my ceramic work, creating a website, setting up an Etsy to sell my work and an Instagram to gain followers. I now feel like I am making real life progress. My next goal is to obtain a position working in a ceramic studio as an apprentice. I have a lot to learn and I feel an apprenticeship will offer me the real life hands on experience I need to further my craft.
